Nationals Format

Just finished another disappointing Nationals campaign.
HoS came close, but couldn't close it out when it mattered.

I did some thinking about the format of Nationals though and had an idea:

Reduce the number of teams to 12 with two pools of 6.
Pros:
- Much better level of competition
- Top 4 seeds don't get a free pass on day 1
- Much more chance that Div 2 Nationals will be successful

Cons:
- ??

Interested to here other people's thoughts on this...

just got a few more pros rubes.....
-we could probably then squeeze nationals into 3 days.
-we wouldn't have to hang out with guys from tasmania or regional australia.
-an improved female/male ratio at the party to improve our chances of picking up.

This seems to be a problem for all sporting codes around australia. Due to the number of playing centers around the country the number of elite teams is some what limited.

I have no personal feelings either way to having 12 or 16 teams. This may be that we have been stuck in the cusp pools since I started playing so easy games are a rarity.

I like the Idea of second tier national and I think it would provide an elite developement path for up and coming players. If for it too suceed we need to shift to 12 teams then I would support that but I believe that once the number of teams surpasses capacity then we should switch back to 16 teams.

Allocations would be interesting. With notable clubs 4 East, 3 south, 1 North, 1 west. It would then be who would take the 3 remaining spots?

Interesting to note that none of the bottom 7 teams from last year (Eastern Greys, Ultimate Evolution, Fakulti, Thunder, Umlaut, Ghengis and Bad apples) didn't play this years nationals.

Two years ago when there were only 14 teams the bottom 4 were Sweet Chilly, Happy Pig, Fear and Umlaut).

I'm sure there are a lot of people who have played nationals the last three years but not with the same team name. So it would appear that it's only the top 9 or 10 teams that are repeatedly making an effort to go to nationals each year.

It was great to get our second team into nationals this year and I'm sure a lot of guys have improved but that's mainly because there aren't many other tournaments for them to go to!
